OSRS Ironman Boss Progression Guide: Unlocks, Gear & First PvM Goals
Ironman PvM progression is different from a main account’s progression. You cannot simply buy the best setup when a boss becomes difficult, so every encounter is also a supply, quest, and preparation check. The best route balances account unlocks with bosses that provide upgrades you can use immediately.
This guide gives Ironmen a practical PvM ladder from early encounters to major milestones such as Zulrah, Vorkath, the Corrupted Gauntlet, and raids. It is a framework rather than a rigid order; your drops, account build, and tolerance for risk should determine the exact route. Use the OSRS Wiki Ironman Guide to confirm current item and quest details.
Build the account before the boss list
Before chasing bosses, make sure your account can sustain attempts:
- Reliable food and potion sources. - Teleports and transportation to the encounter. - Prayer restoration and emergency escape options. - A bank tab for boss supplies and drops. - Core quests for protection prayers, spellbooks, and area access. - A weapon and armor setup that does not depend on one rare drop.
Ironman deaths are expensive in time even when the item loss is recoverable. Early preparation is not wasted time; it creates the supply chain that lets you learn the boss without stopping after every trip.
Early bosses: learn without draining supplies
Start with encounters that teach positioning, prayer use, and inventory management while keeping supply costs reasonable. Scurrius, Giant Mole, Sarachnis, and accessible Slayer bosses can all be useful depending on your stats and gear.
Your goal is not to complete a perfect trip. Learn how to recognize attacks, when to eat, and how to reset the fight. Keep notes on the supplies you consume per kill so you know whether the encounter is sustainable for your account.
Barrows can be an important early-to-midgame activity because it offers equipment upgrades, runes, and the chance to progress toward set rewards. Treat it as a supply and gear loop rather than a guarantee that the next chest will complete your account.
Mid-game goals and unlocks
Mid-game Ironman PvM becomes much easier when you prioritize quests and skilling that improve your whole account. Work toward stronger prayers, transportation, potion access, food preparation, and equipment requirements before pushing a boss purely for its drop table.
Moons of Peril and other mid-level encounters can provide useful armor and combat practice. Wilderness bosses may offer strong rewards, but only bring items you can replace and learn the escape route before risking a trip.
Slayer should remain part of the plan. Slayer levels open bosses, provide supplies, and make combat training feel less separate from account progression. A balanced Ironman does not need to rush every boss at the first possible level.
Zulrah and other account-changing milestones
Zulrah is a common Ironman milestone because its drops can improve Magic, Ranged, ammunition, jewelry, and other parts of the account. The fight also teaches phase recognition, movement, protection switching, and inventory planning.
Do not judge your readiness only by a gear checklist. Practice the rotation, prepare enough food and antipoison, and set a learning goal for each attempt. A first kill may take many tries; once the mechanics become familiar, the encounter can become a stable source of supplies and upgrades.
Vorkath is another major milestone for accounts that meet the quest and combat requirements. Its supplies and consistent loot can support later goals, but the undead dragon punishes missed mechanics. Learn the special attacks and bring a setup that lets you survive mistakes while practicing.
The Corrupted Gauntlet checkpoint
The Corrupted Gauntlet is a powerful Ironman progression checkpoint because it tests combat, movement, resource gathering, and decision-making without requiring a traditional gear setup. It can also provide important endgame weapons and armor.
The learning curve is real. Start with the regular Gauntlet if needed, learn room navigation and preparation, then move into corrupted runs when you can consistently complete the preparation phase. Do not treat an early death as proof that the account is not ready; use it to identify whether the problem is pathing, resource allocation, prayer switching, or boss movement.
Preparing for raids
Raids should be approached as a group of mechanics rather than a single item goal. Build a flexible combat setup, stock supplies, and learn the rooms or bosses at a difficulty where mistakes are recoverable. Group runs can help you learn communication and positioning before attempting solo content.
For Tombs of Amascut, learn the core mechanics before increasing invocations. For Chambers of Xeric, understand room roles, scouting, and supply management. For Theatre of Blood, prioritize team communication and survival. Completion is the first goal; speed and perfect points come later.
Ironman gear priorities
Gear should solve a specific account problem. Prioritize upgrades that:
- Improve accuracy against a boss you can already reach. - Reduce supply usage or increase trip length. - Unlock multiple combat styles or encounters. - Make a quest, diary, or raid requirement easier. - Come from a source that also provides useful supplies.
Avoid grinding a rare item for weeks when a slightly weaker alternative would let you progress into a better reward table. Ironman efficiency is often about choosing the next reliable upgrade, not the theoretical best item.
Supply planning for bossing
Before a long PvM block, set up dedicated supplies. Farm herbs, make potions, prepare food, gather ammunition, and restock teleports in batches. If an encounter drains a resource faster than you can replace it, pause and improve the supply chain instead of forcing more attempts.
Keep a death recovery plan. Know where your items go, which items are protected, and how much time you have to retrieve them. A calm recovery process prevents one mistake from becoming a long account setback.
