OSRS Golem Crafting Guide: XP Rates, Strategy, Gear & Rewards

Golem crafting is a members-only Crafting training method on Wyrmscraig. It combines Mining, Crafting, and optional Hunter preparation into one repeatable activity: mine sunstones, shape a golem, power it with a sunstone core, and finish it with fur. The method is especially attractive for players who want strong Crafting XP while earning uncut gems and making use of a large fur pouch.

This guide covers the unlock requirements, the complete gameplay loop, XP expectations, fur choices, recommended gear, the most efficient rotation, and the rewards you can expect. The activity is based on the Old School RuneScape Wiki Golem crafting guide; XP rates, prices, and drop values can change as the activity is updated.

Golem crafting requirements

You need all of the following before you can start:

- 60 Crafting to perform the activity. - Completion of Fallen From Grace to learn the method. - Membership and access to Wyrmscraig. - A chisel and hammer for the crafting steps. - Four sunstones per golem. - One usable piece of fur per golem.

The Hunter level listed for a fur only matters if you plan to obtain that fur yourself. If you buy the fur from the Grand Exchange, the Hunter requirement does not prevent you from using it. Tatty fur variants do not work, so check the item name before filling your pouch.

How the activity works

The process has four stages:

1. Mine sunstones. Mine an inventory from the sunstone rocks or use the sunstone monolith for a slower, more AFK approach. 2. Start a golem. Click an empty plinth with a chisel, hammer, and four sunstones available. 3. Shape all four sides. Carve the north, east, west, and south sides. Each side normally takes 20 ticks, or 12 seconds, for about 48 seconds per golem before movement. Debris beside a plinth shows which sides are already complete. 4. Finish the golem. Use a sunstone core and a piece of fur on the shaped golem. The core is made by using a chisel on a sunstone, and completing the golem awards Crafting XP plus an uncut gem.

You can speed up shaping by clicking on the tick when the XP drop appears. The next shaping action goes from four ticks to three ticks, reducing the shaping time to about 36 seconds per golem before movement. Spam clicking also works, but the timing method is easier to practice consistently.

Golem crafting XP rates

High-intensity players using strong Mining levels, mining enhancers, efficient shaping clicks, and high-tier furs can reach upwards of 185,000 Crafting XP per hour. A lower-intensity approach is closer to 100,000 Crafting XP per hour, with roughly 28,000 Hunter XP per hour if you obtain the fur by hunting Wyrmscraig goats.

Each completed golem gives a base of 1,560 Crafting XP before the fur bonus. Better furs add more XP, but they can cost more or require a higher Hunter level to gather yourself. The table below gives the main trade-offs from the current wiki data:

| Fur | Hunter level to obtain | Fur XP | Total XP per golem | Approx. XP/hr at 58 golems/hr | | --- | ---: | ---: | ---: | ---: | | Moonlight antelope fur | 91 | 1,200 | 2,760 | 160,080 | | Sunlight antelope fur | 72 | 1,180 | 2,740 | 158,920 | | Dashing kebbit fur | 69 | 1,160 | 2,720 | 157,760 | | Kyatt or dark kebbit fur | 55–57 | 1,140 | 2,700 | 156,600 | | Spotted kebbit fur | 43 | 1,100 | 2,660 | 154,280 | | Wyrmscraig goat fur | 60 | 880 | 2,440 | 141,520 |

These are planning figures, not guarantees. Movement, mining speed, banking, missed clicks, and the fur you choose all affect your real hourly rate. Efficient players can complete more than 58 golems per hour, while a relaxed or learning pace will be lower.

Best fur for your account

Buying fur on a main account

Players with Grand Exchange access can compare the cost-per-XP column and choose the fur that fits their budget. High-tier antelope fur gives excellent XP, but a cheaper mid-tier option can be better value if you are training a long level range. Dashing kebbit, kyatt, dark kebbit, and spotted kebbit fur provide strong XP without requiring the most expensive top-tier supply.

Collecting fur on an Ironman

Ironmen need to obtain their own supply. The wiki recommends dark kebbit fur because dark kebbits have a relatively fast catch rate and the Hunter level requirement is manageable compared with the highest-tier furs. Wyrmscraig goat fur is also convenient because it can be gathered on the island, but its lower XP per golem makes it slower for pure Crafting training.

A large fur pouch can hold enough fur for several rotations. Fill it before starting if your goal is to reduce banking interruptions.

Recommended gear and inventory

A practical combined Mining and Golem crafting setup includes:

- Rune pickaxe when actively mining to take advantage of the momentum mechanic. A higher-tier pickaxe is still useful for some approaches, but the wiki notes that momentum can fail more often with higher-tier pickaxes. - Imcando hammer (off-hand) so the hammer can stay equipped alongside the pickaxe. - Expert mining gloves to improve sunstone collection. - Varrock armour for the Mining benefits. - Prospector outfit for additional Mining XP when available. - Celestial ring or a Celestial signet, if available. - A charged amulet of glory can improve the chance of rolling the gem drop table while mining sunstone rocks.

For the inventory, bring:

- A large fur pouch with at least 25 furs. - An empty gem bag for the gems from completed golems and Mining. - A chisel. - Twenty-five open inventory slots for the five-golem rotation.

You can use a hammer from the inventory if you do not have an Imcando hammer, but an off-hand hammer reduces inventory pressure and keeps the loop cleaner.

The efficient five-golem rotation

The simplest repeatable rotation is built around five golems:

1. Mine 25 sunstones. 2. Chisel five sunstones into sunstone cores, leaving 20 sunstones. 3. Craft and complete five golems, using one core and one fur per golem. 4. Store the gems in your gem bag and return to mining. 5. Repeat until the fur pouch needs refilling or the gem bag needs emptying.
